MODERNIZATION IS NEXT MAIN VECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

Astana, January 27: Kazakhstan has identified social and
economic modernization as its main vector of development for the next decade,
President Nursultan Nazarbayev said as he outlined major priorities of this new
direction in his state-of-the-nation address.

THREE PARTIES TO MAKE UP KAZAKHSTAN’S NEW
PARLIAMENT
Astana, January 17: On January 16, the Central Election
Commission (CEC) of Kazakhstan announced final results of the election to the
lower chamber of the country’s Parliament, Majilis, held on Sunday Jan. 15.
According to the CEC, the Nur Otan Party
received 80.99%, Ak Zhol 7.47%, the Communist People’s Party of Kazakhstan
(CPPK) 7.19%, All-National Social Democratic Party (ASDP) 1.68%, Auyl 1.19%,
the Party of Patriots 0.83%, and Adilet 0.66%.

KAZAKHSTAN: 20 YEARS OF PEACE, PROGRESS AND PROSPERITY
Tokyo, December 14: In celebration of the 20th
anniversary of Kazakhstan’s independence, the Embassy of Kazakhstan in Japan has
been broadcasting videos in Tokyo on large-scale displays at the busiest intersections,
from December 10 through December 24.
Titled “Kazakhstan: 20 Years of Peace, Progress and Prosperity,”
the video runs about 30 seconds and introduces the vast country’s natural
landscapes, modern buildings in the newly constructed capital Astana and
message of peace toward the future.

ALMATY
TO HOST 2017 WINTER UNIVERSIADE
Astana, December 2:
The International University Sports Federation (FISU) Executive Committee
awarded the 2017 Winter Universiade to Almaty on November 29. The city remained
the only bidding candidate for the 2017 Winter Universiade with Trentino
withdrawing last week due to the economic situation in Italy.

FORUM FOR A NUCLEAR-WEAPON-FREE WORLD BECOMES A VALUABLE STEP TOWARDS A SAFER
WORLD
Astana, October 14: Today nuclear security issues play an important role
in world politics, and the International Forum for a Nuclear Weapon-Free World,
held in Astana and Semey on October 12 and 13, turned into a decisive step of
combining efforts of policy makers and the general public towards the
elimination of the nuclear threat.

OF KAZAKHSTAN OUTLINE VISION OF NUCLEAR-WEAPONS-FREE WORLD
Astana, October 11: Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the United
Nations in Kazakhstan, the Nevada-Semey Anti-Nuclear Movement and the Civic
Alliance of Kazakhstan announced the winners of the National Student Art and
Essay Contest which explored the topic “A World Free from Nuclear Weapons” to
mark the 20th anniversary of the closure of the Semipalatinsk test
site.
The official award ceremony took place on October 11,
ahead of the International Forum for a Nuclear Weapons Free World opening
tomorrow. It was attended by Kairat Umarov, Deputy Foreign Minister, Vladimir
Shkolnik, President of the Kazatomprom National Atomic Company, Tomihisa Taue,
Mayor of the Japanese city of Nagasaki, Chiyoko
Motomura, Japanese atomic bomb survivor, Stephen
Tull, UN Resident Coordinator / UNDP Resident
Representative in Kazakhstan, Alina Khamatdinova,
Executive Director of the Civil Alliance of Kazakhstan, and Anambek Mukhashev,

NAZARBAYEV ADDRESSES THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY
Astana, September 23: President
Nursultan Nazarbayev visited New York on September 20 through 22 to take part
in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) debates, a unique forum for the
international community to address global issues.

EXPO 2017: GLOBAL SHOWCASE FOR CULTURE, TECHNOLOGY, ARTS
Astana, September 14: Kazakhstan Foreign Ministry’s Executive Secretary and National Coordinator of Astana’s Expo 2017 project Rapil Zhoshybayev took
part in a friendly meeting of the candidates for Expo 2017 at the headquarters
of the General Assembly of the International Bureau of Expositions (BIE) in
Paris.

NUCLEAR TESTS. EMBASSY OF KAZAKHSTAN INITIATED A TELECONFERENCE BETWEEN SEMEY AND
HIROSHIMA

August 27: The Embassy of Kazakhstan in Japan initiated to hold a teleconference between
Semey and Hiroshima
dedicated to the International Day Against Nuclear Tests and
the 20th Anniversary
of closure of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site.
Teleconference
participants pointed out the importance of a historic
decision made
by President
of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev to close on August
29, 1991 the Semipalatinsk Test Site and highlightedKazakhstan’s substantial contribution to
global security by voluntarily renouncing its nuclear arsenal.

SENATE ELECTIONS FILL ONE THIRD OF SEATS IN THE UPPER HOUSE
Astana, August 19: Kazakhstan’s 2011 Senate elections were held today on
August 19 with 16 of the 47 seats in the upper house of Parliament being
contested. Preliminary figures indicate that the overall turnout of voters
reached 96.6% (the Kazakh Senate is elected by deputies of maslikhats - local
councils). In the election race 39 registered deputy nominees ran for a seat in
Senate. Following the elections Chairman of the Central
Election Commission (CEC) Kuandyk Turgankulov briefed on the first results of
the electors’ voting.

7.1 % GROWTH ANNOUNCED FOR KAZAKHSTAN'S
ECONOMY IN FIRST HALF OF 2011
Astana,
August 8: At the enlarged meeting of the Government in late
July, Kazakhstan’s Minister of Economic Development and Trade Kairat Kelimbetov
summarised the results of the first half of 2011 and set priorities for an
economic development for the remaining six months of the year. Accordingto Kelimbetov, domestic economy demonstrated a positive growth at a rate of 7.1
percent. The growth in the economy resulted from the increasing in industrial
production by 5.8 percent, in the volume of construction work by 1.7 percent,
in trade by 14.3 percent, and in transport services by 6.5 percent.
“High
rate of growth was the result of implementation of Industrialisation Map
project.” Kelimbetov commented.

MINING & METALLURGY CONGRESS EXPANDS INTERNATIONAL TIES IN THE FIELD
Astana, July 8:
Kazakhstan’s capital brought together representatives of mining and metallurgy
industry from around the world for the Second International Congress called
Astana Mining & Metallurgy (AMM-2011) on July 4-6.
The Congress included numerous events and resulted in new
proposals on the development of Kazakhstan’s mining and metallurgy complex
(MMC), important international inter-company agreements and memorandums.

KAZAKHSTAN’S CHAIRMANSHIP IN OIC TAKES OFF TO GOOD START
Astana, June 28: As one of the first orders of business, the group decided to change its name to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. Kazakhstan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Yerzhan Kazykhanov announced the decision following a unanimous vote of the 57 countries in the morning session. He went on to give the floor to the President of the country, Nursultan Nazarbayev, who delivered to the 1,000 participants and guests a wide ranging strategic vision for the future development of the OIC and of the Muslim Ummah as a whole.

ISLAMIC DAVOS IN ASTANA PRODUCES VALUABLE INITIATIVES, PRACTICAL DEALS
Astana, June 10: President Nursultan Nazarbayev of
Kazakhstan put forward a series of initiatives calling to modernise Islamic
world at the 7th World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) at the Palace of
Independence in Astana on Wednesday. An extensive business dialogue platform of
the Muslim world or the so-called “Islamic Davos” took place in the Kazakh
capital on June 7-9, having gathered more than 2,000 government
representatives, academic scholars, heads of industry, professionals and
corporate managers from across the globe. The forum’s main theme was
“Globalising Growth: Connect, Compete, Collaborate”.

AT ASTANA ECONOMIC FORUM PRESIDENT NAZARBAYEV PROPOSED PACT
ON GLOBAL REGULATION
Astana, May 4: Key issues facing modern global economy are
the focus of the Fourth Astana Economic Forum that started on May 3 in the
capital of Kazakhstan, and the President of Kazakhstan has proposed to take on
those issues head on – by inviting all the countries to develop a Pact on
Global Regulation. The forum with a title “New Decade: Challenges and
Prospects” has gathered more than 3,000 participants from 80 countries.
